"Trap" is just short for "It's a trap!" which is (obviously) an ancient meme that was used as a standard response to warn people on old /b/ that Bridget is not an anime "girl." Bridget is not a trans character and never has been. "Trap" got appended to the otoko no ko phenomenon in general that was just starting to grow in popularity in the early 2000s.

A "trap" in the original use is a male-identifying person who nonetheless is pretty enough to be mistaken for female and who thereby makes you question your own heterosexuality.

The attachment to transwomen started because of linetrap, who didn't actually come out as trans for some time. Non-4chan users, as is their fashion, misunderstood and misappropriated the term "trap" to apply to transwomen when it was never intended to and made up a false narrative about it being a slur.
