Yeah it's open world and pretty open in terms of letting you tackle the content at your own pace. No set order for gyms, legendary or enemy team storylines, just do them however you want. I'd suggest "trying it" if you can and see what you think. Arceus was more polished but this one's pretty fun. Lots of stuff to do. I hope the next one brings contests back, I don't know what was the last game that had them because I didn't play any since BW.
