Your also forgetting that there is a difference between how close the track your listening to is to the original master track. Most mp3s are often recordings far down the chain from the masters so they will always sound like shit. This usually has more affect on how things sound than anything else. Where as old vinyls and original CD's tend to be very close to the master track hence why they are more collectable for those who know.

Assuming you have the equipment and ears to listen to it, there is no replacement for high quality uncompressed lossless track assuming it is only once or twice removed from the master track. In theory 256kbps MP3's are ok but we have to take into account the fidelity of the decompressing software your using to reassemble the data from the mp3. This also has a big affect on how it sounds before it even goes to your DAC. This is why people use WASAPI instead of the normal windows API. So in theory if you have everything perfectly setup, yes a mp3 is fine. But those are big ifs. Usually better to have a high quality lossless because it's less hassle in having to get everything just right.
