As a dedicated Type Moon fag, I have to interrupt for a moment and just clarify something. I will oversimplify it to curb my autism a little.

The Nasuverse is full of mages who are constantly trying to reach the Root. Basically they want to become God, but it's more than that and there is some uncertainty as to whether or not you'd actual get Godlike powers or just cease to exist.

Anyways literally every single person with magic in their blood works towards this goal and they dedicate their life to this. When they die, they pass down everything to the first of their bloodline and then that person continues on etc.

This work takes lifetimes, and it's possible that it might take the entire life of the universe of mages grinding away at it to even come close to the Root.

The Holy Grail War, even in universe, is seen as the dumbest stupidest fucking attempt ever to try and cheat this system. Nobody takes it seriously, and its basically a Nigerian Telephone Scam to try and take a shortcut to the Root without you know, dedicating billions of years of your descendants grinding away to try and get to the Root.

The families participating in it are a Family that had True Magic (which is a path to the Root) and lost it, a Japanese family that doesn't fucking matter at all and is relatively new so they're millions of years behind all the other mages who have lifetimes of a head start, a family that basically lost magic altogether so their latest descendants are basically shitty regular humans...and a Japanese high school student whose adopted Father taught him wrong, as a joke.

Basically the HGW having any sort of hard and set rules makes no sense and nobody gives a fuck about it in universe anyways because again, it's widely seen as a get rich quick scam by a bunch of dumb shitters who think you can just skip lifetimes of work. Which you can't.

Unless of course you are some glasses wearing Japanese fag and you somehow befriend the actual Avatar of the Root itself. Pic related.

TLDR: The HGW is a joke and even in universe nobody gives a fuck about the rules. The whole thing has only been around for less than 1000 years anyways, which in mage time, is fucking small fry.
