The last eight years of social politics on the internet. Internet politics and politics in niche hobbies are directly intertwined because these hobbies really only exist on the internet, anymore.

Weeb communities are dead. Cons are barren and also closed, most anime is put through the same filter that movies are, now. The entire hobby is inundated with normalfags who hate Japan and everything about it but want to "Fit in". Most anime released nowadays is the diet tab version of what anime used to be like. You can still find good stuff but you have to stray waaaaay outside of the comfort zone of the majority of people and that results in the usual moral panics that normalfags are known for the second anything crosses their minuscule comfort zone.
The VAST majority of people who say they're "Weebs" now or say they like anime actually hate anime and the people who watch it, but can't actually leave the hobby to go do something else because if they leave it; the "weirdoes" (see: original fans who used to be the awkward nerds who watched it) would come back and take over. They stay and occupy it purely to attempt to "change" it into something they like, but they don't speak the language and don't consume the material. They just bitch about it on twitter and facebook.

Weebs and video games have just become various flavors of resetera everywhere, and trash taste is no exception. We like variety, unless it offends us. We demand diversity, but only if everything is the same. We enjoy this pasttime, but only if it's the popular stuff that we deem acceptable. We are accepting of everyone, but only if they're carbon copies of us.
