I have spent tons of time at my animal shelters. I started out socializing the dogs that didn't get much attention by taking them out for a couple of hours of exercise, they loved coming out of the kennel for a while. Eventually they had me grooming them, this was great. I can't tell you the number of times a dog got adopted after I cleaned them up, removed mats and ticks. Then later I started volunteering in the clinic helping with the spays and neuters. Overall it felt great helping the animals as best I could and seeing them go to, hopefully, permanent homes. I'd recommend it if you like working with animals.
