Vei's rise in 2020 was because she was seen as THE crass western indie. I remember during her JP days, she had a few japanese female viewers who liked her because she actually had a spine compared to corpo vtubers, she was unironically a feminist icon for them.
But now that there's tons of vtubers like that, Vei definitely doesn't seem that special anymore apart from the Vshojo brand. She unironically pioneered the vtubing style (in the west, mind you) that people like Numi, Shylily and Yuzu do.
