If you are an athlete (or someone who wants to be in shape like an athlete) then obviously there are much better things you should be doing for physical preparation, such as heavy lifts or high intensity interval training or more sport specific exercises.
Going for a run is better then nothing of course. But low intensity cardio is really the most "I don't want to do exercise" kind of exercise there is. More wear for less gains.

Fool notion. Building muscle increases basal metabolic rate, which means lower fat build up; something neither cutting calories or doing cardio provides (which is why people trying these things always rebound).

Generally speaking, the largest health benefits (and most efficient use of time) in dedicated exercise come from when your maximal strength at your level is engaged vs the resistance to a movement. Eg, the heaviest weight you can carry in a motion, the fastest speed you can sprint over a given span, the furthest distance you can jump in a single leap, et cetera.

A barbel for instance is a very convenient tool for adding resistance to a wide range of different movements, which is why they are ubiquitous. You could burn more calories in a single 3x2x1 set of max lifts than you would in half an hour of jogging (and get more >functional development out of it to boot).

Compound movements like the olympic lifts (snatch, clean and jerk, both sides), deadlifts, weighted carries, prowler pushes and sled drags are all very good. This may sound weird but it would be good to >talk to someone at the gym who is experienced to help spot your movements when starting out. Proper lifting technique is a skill, and like any other skill needs to be practiced.
