More than that: you also mention "weird design". For that you have to go even further back to see any NIjisanji design that would qualify for "weird design" would be Gwelu, all the way back in November 2019.

The Nijisanji you knew in pre 2020 ceased to exist long ago. Everything after that was the exact same, be it for the main branch or NIjiEN.
The identity issues you mention are not about "NijiEN", but about NIjisanji themselves.
