You don't have to take my advice since I'm also learning (finishing 31 days of anki now) but I try to do some Japanese reading after anki using the timeboxing method https://pomofocus.io/

Set it to 20 minutes, 25 is way too much to start (reading Japanese as a beginner is very mentally taxing but you should keep an eye out for words you've seen in anki). I've been very pleased with my small steps and it will help raise your retention rate a lot while reducing the amount of time you spend in anki.
