The Realms Between is under constant assault by a bunch of eldritch gods. The Greater Will, The Frenzied Flame, The Formless Mother and a bunch of ones that don't even have names. They need to pick some god to ally themselves with or the others would eat them alive.

The Greater Will failed because it wanted to maintain Order but it was so concerned with its own survival that it introduced biased flaws into its own version of Order. It was always going to fall eventually, those cracks would have let other Outer Gods in to meddle even if Ranni didn't exist. And since The Frenzied Flame wants to burn the world to ash and the Formless Mother created the Omen Plague, the fairly hands off Moon God is probably the best bet from a list of very scary options.
