Part of what makes Lain so good at diving into the crux of this issue is the lack of firm conclusions. Attempting to analyze a modern phenomenon powered by internet culture is always a losing battle, especially going forward now that the speed of cultural metamorphosis is accelerating through the steep part of the curve with AI coming online and promising to enable media generation that will make today's firehose of data look like a trickle of piss.
Lain got it right by never nailing anything down. Don't attempt to understand the cultural norms of the present or the future, we can only live moment by moment, choosing either to immerse or break free.
I try to escape but I fear I'm in too deep, caught in a current and carried away downstream away from any hope of rescue. Maybe I'll find some consolation among the frightening deep dwelling fish and learn how to breath beneath the surface. Maybe my struggle will delight the shore-bound onlookers and a life-buoy will reach me someday. All I know is that I must keep swimming even if I cannot tell which direction is up anymore.
