I feel like I have no ball on this park since I'm not interested in the game but I'll talk anyway because I'm a retard. Some anons mentioned back when Finana was streaming vol0 that Nekopara was kinda big for its time because of the way the characters and the scenes animate. It's also super short and requires little focus on part of the audience since all you do is watch catgirls do shit and the story rarely goes beyond that (all I hear is that every cat has a sad backstory about how they ended working on the bar and that the world is kinda racist towards catgirls).

Besides that a lot of streamers seem to use it to be ironic and mock VNs in general because this is popular, hence most (if not the entirety) of the genre must be like that. I'm also sure there is a sad bunch out there who just wats to jerk off to the catgirls, and I only mean sad in the sense that they don't know there is better games out there for that.
