If man were inherently good, then there would be no value in good deeds, because it would only be natural. One does not commend the clock for telling time, as that is it's only function. If man were inherently good, then there would be no true good, as it is the same as a machine executing it's function.
The reverse is also true. To believe man is inherently evil is to remove any level of sin from mankind itself. There can be no sin in a being that merely does what it is meant to do. Just as one does not call the flower sinful for wilting, one would not be able to call man sinful for committing evil.
The very fact that our sins can be judged should make this fact clear. Disparity between good and evil, and judgement between the two, cannot exist if one is a default state. How could a man possibly be judged fairly when the scales of judgement are tilted in one outcome's favor?
Humanity simply is. What each and every one of us decides to be is only up to us, because mankind has both the capacity to choose, and the capacity to judge itself. To assign either good or evil as "inherent to our being" is to give up your right to choose, and to judge in turn.
