Having any way visual way to convey expression (webcam or avatar) and being notably entertaining are just bonuses.
Used to be that I could only ever watch videos about games and many other topics at low resolution and without any commentary.

Plus they play games. Part of the reason people will try their hand at v-tubing even though they know they won't necessarily roll in dough is that at least they can have fun times with others, possibly even people they could only be fans of previously.
