Small to mid sized streamers need to work harder to give their stream an identity. That's why overlays are for them. Once you've made it you can pull back, you don't need to separate yourself from the pack as much anymore because you're already well known.

This is just like the react meta argument. People mistakenly think react content is what gets views because the top streamers do it. But actually, it only works for them because people know who they are already. If no one cares who you are, why would they want to watch you react to things.

There are still big chuubas who still use overlay though, for example girldm
