Didn't work out all that well for Gems and they have Square Enix's backing. They're not dead, but you'd think having the backing of one of the largest multimedia companies in Japan would lead you to not being less relevant then a bunch of no name startups. Having a big company working with you only matters if you get support and people helping you, especially in the modern era where you don't need to actually know a guy to get the number of a composer and can just message them on Twitter or their business email.
