Honestly, yeah, I don't think the schizos should be eliminated by present time at all. For /luxnoc/ posters at least, a lot of them originally intended to use the split as a sort of emergency bunker during schizo hours. Except schizo hours became schizo days, and /luxnoc/ was peaceful and productive even while the main general went down in flames. It made it so that a lot of /luxnoc/ posters eventually just decided to stop visiting general. I'm under the impression this is how it is for a lot of splits -- most of them are peaceful and perfectly content. So personally, in-universe I'd have it that instead of the Badlands being reclaimed, defenses and anti-schizo technology just improved. The kingdoms themselves rarely get attacked anymore, but the Badlands are still an impenetrable cesspit.
