I personally think you can be a little TOO anal about balance, and specifically about balancing things in ways that reflect real history. It's ultimately still a fantasy world, and some allowances should be made. But that voice of reason and doubt is also necessary, so please don't feel the need to stop doing it. Just be aware that as we are, in fact, writing in a fantasy world, sometimes majority opinion will simply disagree with the need to make everything 100% realistic. People should be allowed to do some things just because they're cool or fun, as long as it isn't completely bonkers broken.
