The problem is that the minimum apartment size small, which leads to compromises in the kitchen. But the thing is, it do not get smaller unless you are renting a part of another persons home.
And because the metro line, the buss system and the shinkasen exist.... you don't need to limit your search to whatever is almost within walking distance of work.

If you read NHK or Dasei 67 Percent you will know what 95% of Japanese rentals look like.
The only problem is that the insulation isn't great and the walls are usually thin side to side, but okay up to down due fire codes.
Being a gaijin just means it takes longer to get the housing done, but the end result is the same.
