Contrarianism is deeply embedded in 4chan culture so on other boards popular things are usually perceived as trash, mainstream or normalfag tier so why are le meme shark and other top dog holos, by extension, so popular on /vt/? Why don't underdogs like Choco, Mel, Aki, Azuki get so much more attention?

Well, you've got two choices.
1: you make your own thing. Set up a website, or a community, or hell, even an IRC, and try to attract people to it. You won't get people from here, however. No advertising allowed, and everyone is far too wary of what happened to most other circlejerk discords that were made by anons on other boards.
2: You work to make this place better, by being a better poster, and trying to volunteer in ways that would improve the board overall. Make OC, discuss something of interest in a good way, always report and ignore those who want to make it worse, and if they aren't getting caught fast enough, educate the retarded masses on what targets they should know to blame. Set the doctrine of the community and enforce it through force of quality, until it can be enforced by the cold iron and steel.
Your choice, but I'll keep doing the second option.
