So let me get this straight.

Halo was built by the Forerunners, a super-advanced alien race that ruled the galaxy. They built the Halo rings to exterminate entire regions of the galaxy of all sentient life. They did this because a highly dangerous parasitic race known as the Flood came from another galaxy. The Flood consumes all sentient life in its path, because of the nature of their species, they become just as powerful as whatever race they are assimilating. and that includes the Forerunners. When enough of the Flood gathers together, it creates a Gravemind, an ultra-intelligent hive mind being that is almost impossible to kill. The only way to beat them was to starve them of food, hence the Halo rings.

The Covenant is an alien religious order that consists of multiple species, most notably the Prophets who parasitically rule the society. They falsely believe that firing the Halo rings will send them to heaven, and so their religious mission is to fire the rings no matter what. The only one who can stop them is Master Chief, humanity's #1 supersoldier Spartan. 10 feet tall, with the ability to flip a tank with one hand, the Spartan soldier is the only thing that can match the Sanghelli Elites in combat.
