there's not really a "default" size, but generally you want your sampler resolution to be an increment of 64, so for example I use 640x640, but if I wanted a landscape shot I'd do 640x960, and then these are upscaled by 2.0 to become the 1280x1280 images you see here.
What works for me, is start low and upscale a lot.
