Like most people in HL/Niji he was a streamer before becoming a vtuber, but he wasn't big at all. His vtuber debut actually increased his CCV and that increased a lot more after he joined Niji (first two months in picrel are him as an indie vtuber)

Mito, who's a mainly a zatsu streamer, has been getting 10k+ people to consistently watch her talk about random japanese subcultures for over 3 years now anon, vtubing isn't going away anytime soon neither is it so heavily tied to one game as you think it is. To give a context of how irrelevant minecraft is to her content in the entirety of 2021 she has done 5 minecraft streams (2 in Jan, 1 in July, and 2 minecraft horror maps this month). Heck between Kuzuha and Hal, apex is far more important to the vtubing meta than minecraft right now.

You have heard rrats from this holoschizos. Kzh wasn't even breaking 4 digit viewers back when he joined Nijisanji (the first two months in picrel were before he joined Nijisanji), which I'll admit is a lot for a startup company and streamers in general, but it's nowhere near what he pulls now. He had to grind for years to get to that position, which is why he's also just a bad example for a talent that will make you an overnight success.

Nijisanji and the current livestreaming live2d vtubing exists in the way it does mainly because they lucked out with finding Mito who's a once in a generation talent as a small startup. She also had no history of streaming before she joined Nijisanji. Now you can of course argue that finding your own Mito is easier said than done, and putting that expectation on any startup's talent scouting is foolhardy.
