This is what I did. I found a model for visual novel sprites like pic related. It's pretty easy to find a few that have commercial licenses okay after purchase since they're intended to be used in visual novels, dating games, apps, etc. The model I bought was just $7 after converting from USD to YEN.

Later found out that my artist was also accepting requests on Skeb, so I commissioned a custom piece from her.
