It was self-imposed, apparently to utilise his lessened sense of taste/smell from the coof. Which I don't think was really the case because he kept giving way too much deeply unnecessary info about the flavour.

The 100+ came about because he decided that every time he died in Super Mario Bros., he would eat a bug. And then he added a new rule in which he would eat 2 bugs if he returned to an earlier save spot, which he did often because he couldn't clear Bowser without the fire powerup thingy - he couldn't get the hang of jumping over him. They weren't even small bugs, they were pretty big, to a point where he started getting full.

God I love this absolute freak of a man. picrel is how he looked after eating 8 in a row...
