The anime is actually really good, some of /a/ spergs out about it because it uses 3D animation, but imo it's one of very few anime that use the medium to its full potential and it looks great. If you can spare the time I'd recommend watching the anime and then reading the manga from the start.
Cool Moai idea... A field of Moai's would be a graveyard. Iirc the Moai represented deified ancestors IRL, so that's actually a pretty close interpretation of that.
