3D Vtubers like Ai used to be the norm actually, the problem was that they required expensive studio equipment which made livestreaming in general a big hassle which is why most of the early vtubers made short form videos. Using Live2d to create an easily accessible alternative for vtubing to allow livestreaming content from home instead of a studio was the major innovation of Ichikara back in 2018 that made them the biggest vtubing agency in Japan and helped them pump out 100s of talents at a cheap and effective cost.

The thing is Ichikara also invests a lot in 3D, AR, and VR, they give a 3D model to any liver above 100k subs and regularly use them for concerts, shows like Levergacha, and general shitposting like the Lotion Sumo and Lotion Curling streams, but all of these requires the livers to attend the studio. So they also have an alternative called Niji3D which only uses your phone to track the motion and can be used at home, sadly it's not that good while tracking hands and legs (picrel is from one of Gunduo's Niji3D streams) but a lot of livers like Debi, Ange, and Amamya use it extensively regardless and it gives their streams a lot of expressiveness.
