They represent care, belonging, trust and safety. They show that you care about that person, that you want them to feel happy, and they actually will thanks to the serotonin released when hugging. Holding someone else to share your warmth, squeezing them like you want to make them a part of you, letting them know that you want them to be near you, that you don't want to let them go, that they're valid and they belong here. There's vulnerability in them, especially if one person is smaller, but how can there be any trust without risk? A hug can hurt, can be hard to escape from, leaves your back open. But a hug says "You're safe with me." It says that you won't hurt them, that you'll be there for them, that you'll protect them and comfort them.
Hugs are our ultimate symbol of affection. There isn't much that feels better after a hard day than a hug from someone you love.
