>Henri
Whenever I think of the Master Baiters now, I see a picture of Henri with a hook stuck in his back. The hook is attached to a rope and the rope hangs from a ceiling. At the end of the rope, unable to get his feet on solid ground, Henri dangles in the air, his face distorted in agony, his arms and legs thrashing about violently. Behind him stands the Master Baiter. Having operated his hook successfully, the Master Baiter stands by with his other instruments, the Dox Post and the Discord Raid. He watches the thrashing Henri, speculating, considering. If necessary, he will move in with his Concern Post and cut the victim’s throat, or with his Dox Post cleave through the victim’s head. The Master Baiter is a maker of tools and if he is an expert tool-maker, the bait and hook alone will serve his purpose. The victim, in his thrashing to be free of the hook, will most likely cut into his back the crippling gorge the Master Baiter seeks. The Master Baiter waits and watches. What a Henri will do, once he is caught on the hook, is always a gamble. There is the chance, of course, that the Henri may squirm off the hook, in which case the Master Baiter will move in with his other weapons. There is, too, the chance that the victim may accomplish more than the Master Baiter strives for and dox himself or, giving an unexpected twist to his thrashing, get himself banned completely from every community in Phase Connect.

Should break or schism occur, the Master Baiter as much as anyone may pause in distress, surveying a wreckage he did not seek and for which he feels no guilt. When he hooks, cuts, or cleaves his object is not to destroy but to impede and remove. Not personal animosity but competition for his Oshi's attention has impelled him to use his weapons. The Henri on the hook was not an enemy but an obstacle. Even had the Master Baiter cut his competitor’s throat he would have cut it sufficiently but no more; had he cleaved his skull, he would have cleaved it just enough. Of his weapons, the bait post is considered the least barbaric, the one which requires the most skill and the one for which he will receive the least censure. The bait’s purpose is to catch and upset, and it was designed for no other purpose. If the Henri on the hook receives more injury than was intended, he obviously received it by trying too obstinately to regain his balance on ground he should have forsaken, or by losing inner balance in falling into a frenzy he should have had the strength to avoid. Nor will the spectators watching on the out-skirts of the circle be inclined to condemn the Master Baiter if tragedy, instead of upset, occurs. The bait is the commonly accepted instrument of the circle where the Master Baiter works, a state of affairs which should have been clear to the victim as soon he walked into the circle.
