The truth is that a lot of these corpos have been trying to find ways to squeeze out more money out of the games they make. Subscription based services really didn't work well, hence why for a lot of MMORPGs they transitioned to the superior micro transactions cash shop. Then other multiplayer games use battle passes as a form of subscription service to entice players to pay for more than the base game.

Modern games are more about addiction and wringing out as much money from the player than games of old. They have had 20 years to experiment with alternative payment models and how to hook players to them and now we have these monstrous and psychologically addictive methods honed in from trail and error over those two decades.
