If you don't kill the caged dogs before starting the generator they break out on the return trip and there are twice the number of annoying pieces of shit you have to deal with.
I've seen enough playthroughs of this where the streamer doesn't kill the dogs that it annoys me that such an obvious danger flag is ignored in a survival horror game.
