It helps that their skull has about the same structural integrity as a shitty bridge made of popsicle sticks and Elmer's glue, but it's very flexible. The lower jaw is disconnected where the left and right dentary meets, leaving only an elastic ligament connecting the two. The quadrate bone forms a joint with both the rest of the skull and the lower jaw which greatly expands their gape, and the left and right halves of the palate are also independent of each other. This allows them to bite and pull an object with one half of their jaw while extending the other half forward. It's called the "pterygoid walk".
