I know mentioning "attachment style theory" might reek of armchair psychology, but it's a pretty basic and well-established thing. Everyone here must know at least one person who in HS had literally hundreds or even thousands of friends and someone who was content with just one.
tl;dr someone with a small friend circle being salty at befriending someone with a large friend circle is a tale as old as the world
