The Sapling knows where where to miss Fauna at all times. It knows this because it knows where Fauna isn't. By subtracting where she is from where she isn't, or where she isn't from where she is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The missing subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective crying to drive the Sapling from a position where she isn't streaming to a position where she is, and arriving at a position where she wasn't, she now is. Consequently, the position where she is, is now the position that she wasn't, and it follows that the position that she was, is now the position that she isn't.
In the event that the stream that it is on is not the stream that it wasn't, the Sapling has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the Sapling is, and where it wasn't.
