You speak so familiarly about conventions; did you go to a lot in the past? Or even any at all? Do you have friends or acquaintances from those experiences who you can talk to now about your hobbies? Follow up with them and see if they can introduce you to people or groups they know. That's probably your best bet if you want to find a way into those private groups that you mentioned. Otherwise, try to tolerate these fans a bit more. Some may come off really distasteful publicly (twitter or whatever) but may be more tolerable in private. The more you actively talk, the more likely you are to come across someone who's lurking but acts or thinks very similarly to you. That's another reason why you may want to consider being the conversation starter. You'll have much more influence over the flow of the convo which will filter out anyone who can't click. This is all just my opinion. It's hard to say as an outsider looking in.
