/vt/ - Virtual Youtubers

I've yet to watch one but is there a reason many vtubers make their character trans?
I assume it's not just a random choice, it's a conscious decision to make it part of the lore/universe.
Do they manage to use it for entertainment? A backstory explaining it? Is there such a big audience looking superficially for trans characters?
