Some people get roped in by the cool characters / races, sometimes even the combat mechanics, but the problem is the formula is based on encouraging the player to repeat the same content over and over through various psychological incentives, and not everyone can stand that without going postal.

I've played a few MMOs with friends and enjoyed them to some degree, but I always end up playing longer than I want to due to sunk cost fallacy and eventually ragequit.
