To round this up with some further evidence: the Baby Boom happened at a period where men were significantly outcompeting women in terms of educational attainment and income. Women were willing to marry younger (and marry younger men in their twenties - opposed to established men in their thirties) and have children earlier. It should be noted that men did not become 'richer', they were not able to support a family 'better' during that period, they merely held greater 'relative' status. But nowadays this is obviously an impossibility to recreate. It seems women are more suited for academic pursuits - even in comparatively patriarchal countries, ruling out for there to be some kind of 'liberal' bias. Perhaps not necessarily in terms of productive output but at least in terms of overall numbers of graduates.
