NTA, but as someone who isn't too much of a history buff I'll give my casual reccomendations of "1776" by David McCullough and "Almost a Miracle: The American Victory in the War of Independence" by John Ferling. The former only covers the year 1776 for the most part but that allows it to cover more obscure battles and events and creates an engaging narrative to follow. The latter is much longer and more comprehensive (I'd only gotten about a third of the way through it before I just skipped to parts that seemed interesting) but still very much a pop history introduction. Both focus more the the military side of things rather than the political, so it doesn't really touch too much on the conversation you two were having but that's the extent of my reading.
