That has more to do with bad cinematography. You can make shitty costumes look a lot better with camera angles, lighting and scene composition. For example the original Darth Vader costume looks really goofy with its oversized plastic helmet and the random sci-fi shit on his belt and chest but with the right camera angles and lighting it can look really imposing.
