They make them pay because it has a cost and it wouldn't be feasible to cover that cost for every girl.

2) She was blessed for being able to do three (3) lives this year, but with more girls doing it she’ll likely “only” be able to do two next year
3) All of her this year were booked 4 months in advance
4) Lives are entirely by the initiative of the girls

As for merch any girl ponying up for a 3D live is smart enough to self produce the merch as well.

These days Hololive puts a lot of value in music production, even setting aside a budget for the girls to produce originals, and both the companies and the girls value merchandise production a lot, going to the lengths of the girls paying for their 3D Live concerts from their own pockets

The criticism going Gura’s way is that she’s not doing that either. She just disappears and has very little to show for.
Maybe what you’re saying is that “the person inside”, Gura, doesn’t even need to be there for profit to be made off her character

That’s true but that’s just a rehash of the argument of that “nijirai” about how the streamer doesn’t matter, and all that matter is the profit the company makes and I genuinely disagree.
I believe the audience is there for the person inside as much as they are for the character and if she won’t be there for the audience the character ceases to exist.

That was already known in this thread but it’s nice to have it said unambiguously like that.
The interesting part is that the live clearly is an “infomercial”, with the reward being to have a 80k+, sometimes 100k+ audience to shill your merch.
Also it explains why Aqua, Shion and Ayame aren’t having their December lives: they surely thought it is still 2021 and only a handful of girls would be using the studio and didn’t book early enough.
