So parents would raise their children on the idea that chasing success was the only important thing in life, and that showing that success was not only a way to show status, but to show divine favor. If a child hadn't achieved enough success by the time they were an adult, the parent would start to worry that they were going to hell, so they would send them to make their way in the world and prove that God loved them by finding success in the world.
That's why you can see a lot more of that kind of culture in Anglo-influenced countries, because it's a concept that was mostly propagated in the Anglican religious sphere and the branches of Protestantism that were close to that one. You don't see it in much else of the world because most cultures didn't have that kind of social pressure, and so they tended towards the idea of families gathering wealth within the family and working to promote group success over individual "thrive or die" strategies.
