I'm no expert but other artists use similar schemes. Basically line art and flats are straightforward, basic shading defines form and shape, and in my mind is dependent on the viewer more so than the light source. You can usually take your basic shading and add and change the occlusion and environmental light layers without changing anything underneath and it still looks pretty good. Of course you can paint on one layer and blend, lots of people do that, this is just a way to break it down mentally that's easy. You can always go back and flatten and paint directly if you want too
