They hold up beautifully well if you can adapt AD&D's mechanics, some archaic stuff like rerolling stats for the best statspread at the start of the game for your PC, understanding how THAC0 works and acknowledging that some classes are broken in some ways even with the mods that fix most issues, and that you can totally break the game with a lot of builds This actually becomes half the fun of the replays, besides trying out different party compositions to see their stories, or to make different choices that fit your party's alignments, and straight up even do things to see their opposition reactions or conflicts between them and opposed party members.. The games make for an incredibly fun adventure, and I like the focus of BG1 more overall but BG2 has plenty of great things about it, I consider them a single package together. I spoilred my reply to the other anon specifically so you don't get spoiled too much, but it also doesn't reveal the brilliance of Sarevok and his foster father, IMO. Sarevok's VA is also excellent. Something happens that lets you interact with him in 2, and you can make a few choices in regards to that, but my favorite by far is the choice that leads to redeeming him and having him in your party, especially because of the dialogue that spawns from it and the various party members

I tried the yarrharr'd copies of the Beamdog ones and just play the originals with the modpacks I like, not a fan of what they did. Original intro was much better. I like Sarevok because he straight up was. "I will rule the Throne of Blood. I will kill all my brothers and sisters, because I will become the Lord of Murder. I will use my foster father's resources and powers to spread murder and death and to find my brothers and sister and slay them all." He was just truly evil and excellent for it.
