>What is it, Otacon?
>Snake, have you ever heard of vtubers?
>Vtubers?
>It stands for Virtual YouTubers.
>Virtual? Like the VR training programs?
>No, not exactly... They're entertainers who... well, it's complicated, but they're basically actors in a kind of digital, interactive TV show.
>Interactive TV show?
>Right. But it takes place on the World Wide Web, instead of over the air waves. And it's on your computer screen instead of a regular television set!
>You can watch TV on a computer?
>You bet! The internet's come a long way. Anything's possible, nowadays.
>Huh... So how does it work?
>Well, a camera connected to the actor's computer captures the motion data of the actor as they move, all the way down to their facial expressions. Then, it processes that data in real time, and creates a virtual representation of the actors using a digital avatar of the character they're playing, costume and all, and then places them in a digital movie set. There's no need for a a conventional costume department, make-up, or even practical effects. The character doesn't even have to be human! It's true that most of them are cute girls... But they could be anything. A robot, a creature from mythology, or even a space alien! And the best part is that the audience can talk with them, and they respond to you in-character!
>Sounds like something out of a science fiction movie.
>It used to be, yeah. But recent advancements in AI and digital Japanimation techniques have finally allowed for it to become a reality. There are lots of companies pumping a ton of money into the technology, and it's becoming a big industry.
>There's already that much money in it?
>Yeah. You'd be surprised how dedicated anime fans can be. But there's something about it that's been bothering me.
>What is it?
>I can't say for sure, but it looks to me like some of these systems are derived from the same technology used for the VR training you mentioned, or the virtual test environment supercomputers I used while developing REX. And at least half of that technology is supposed to be classified.
>It's not something they could develop it themselves?
>It's technically possible, but... no. Private entertainment companies couldn't have developed it so quickly. It's too much money, even for Hollywood. And the most successful vtuber groups are relatively small tech companies that are based in Japan.
>But if they didn't make it, that would mean...
>Yeah... The tech was probably leaked. There's a good chance that someone at those companies has connections to DARPA, ArmsTech, or Livermore National Labs. Maybe all of them.
>But why leak it?
>Beats me... As far as I can tell, there hasn't been any military application. Although it could have something to do with further developing the VR systems and AI training protocols.
>You said that part of this was caused by advancing AI development. Are you sure that the vtubers themselves aren't AIs that are being trained?
>No, they're definitely all human. AI isn't that far along yet. I don't think we could have an AI vtuber for a while still, but it's definitely possible.
>With how fast things are moving, maybe sooner than we think.
>Yeah. Anyway, I'll show you some when you get a second. You need a high speed modem and internet service to watch. Most civilian internet services won't cut it, but we can watch it in my lab!
>I'm a little busy. Besides... I think I'll stick with real women. And real movies.
>Oh, don't be so close-minded, Snake. I know it might seem silly right now, but I've got a hunch that vtubers are the future!
>...I'll think about it.
>...
