I watched Ban Hada get super frustrated with Vampire Survivors and claim the game was impossible. To prove her wrong, I played for the first time. It took me a dozen or so attempts, but I managed to beat the game with:
-- NO meta-upgrades
-- The first character you can use
So it is possible.

The thing about this game is that it's all about upgrades. You need to be getting experience fast and snowball your levels. During my snowball moment, shortly before the bones-wave, I was getting a new level every 10 seconds or something, because my wave-clear was so good.

To summarize you need
-- Knockback (King bible, whip, even garlic serves this purpose in the early game)
-- Single-target damage (magic wand, knives, fire-wand)
-- Wave-clear (lightning ring, santa water, runetracer)
-- zoning (axe, fire-wand, peachbone/ebony wings)

And you want to go for the supplementary items that benefit the weapons you've chosen. Like the axes scale really well with Candelabrador. The King Bible works really well with Empty Tome. Some items are just downright good. Spinach is an almost must-have. Duplicator is a fucking cheat-item that makes you completely OP.

I found that during the difficult moments when the enemies were starting to get beefy, my wave-clear still got me plenty of experience, so I could still level up instead of being left behind. I found that when I didn't have sufficient knockback, I really needed a self-defense item like Laurel or Garlic, or else I'd just be killed in the early-mid game. And once my zoning tools were good enough, nothing could even get close to me. The axes especially.

Getting chests is extremely important to level up faster, so focusing down the boss monsters is a big priority during the critical moment. Especially if you roll big. I had success leveling up luck, especially if you can get it early. Those random items can be really good, and totally turn the tide of your growth.

In summary, this game is all about snowballing. You need to level up FAST and outpace the monsters. You should be leveling up once every 30 seconds, or faster. You will hit a speedbump during the critical period, but accelerate again later, especially if you're getting upgrades out of the chests.

Once you enter the late game, the game actually becomes pretty boring. You just snowball hard, and the monsters can't even touch you.
