To be fair, Bruce was a wimpy spoiled rich kid and that directly led to leaving the cinema early and his parents dying. and on his first night of crime fighting, Bruce wasn't Batman, he only turned into a bat after getting his ass kicked and almost dying, since people aren't afraid of some dude. He had to seem larger than life, so he created Batman. It made him intimidating especially way back then when costumes weren't as common.
