For me. I'm biased but I say Sophie's game is the best start. Its probably the most casual of the atelier games though and a lot of people dislike it, but Sophie is a great girl and all the side characters are fantastic too, and personally I liked the more casual format.

Otherwise start with Rorona, and go with her trilogy (rorona -> totori -> meruru), its the most polished of the OG type games. And all the girls are cute and flat.
