They're playing characters at the end of the day, and people get really attached to characters
The line just feels blurred because there IS a real person behind the anime avatar and while there's some degree of acting and being in character, they usually go on about stuff that goes in their real life (within reason of course)
As a result, you get something that's both fictional (the character, the performance) but also real (the stories, the personality)
So they are actors and they play characters, and maybe it's weird to like 'em or think about 'em romantically but as long as you're not completely sabotaging yourself or others, is it really so bad?
